Director Thinks He is Agent 007

I work as a progam assistant at an art gallery. I am designing an exhibition. The new big Director has been changing my project. He wants to put his favourite artists in the show instead. He also says I should fix the programs that go with this exhibition. "Make them more cosmopolitan!" I do what he tells me.

The Director called me in to his office. He asked me if I'd like to be supervised by him instead of by my boss. He is her supervisor. She does not know he is doing this.

Aunt Art Agony, this makes me nervous. I didn't know what to tell him. What is this Director trying to do?

Your international man of mystery appears to be working very hard to re-engineer the society of your gallery. Unfortunately, he may be the only one who thinks he is stealthy. By now, everyone else must be aware of it. If everyone is hip to the game, it is nearly over. The light of day means the end for evil villans. Try to be invisible and stay inside the Cone of Silence!

here is a banal but hopefuly practical thought:try to clarify from your immediate boss what your job description is especially vis a vis this project. I don't really understand what a project assistant is
in your context nor what is meant in this context by "designing an exhibition". Better find out!!!
Usually the curator chooses the artists for an exhibit(go figure...it's called curating) but if the director wants to participate then suggest to your boss that he come to a meeting to talk about how the show is going....( where there is a certain public aspect to his "meddling") and he will have to either get into the game or stay away. At least his interest in having a say will be on the table.
ask what he means by "make them more cosmopolitan". make obvious notes in the meeting then send them back to him with thanks for his input and copy it to your boss saying how helpful he is....play his game but make it public!
About being supervised by him instead of your boss...perhaps you could ask him what projects he has coming up that he wants your help with and then you could bring up these wonderful opportunties with your boss when the 3 of you are together and ask whether you might take some time to work on this project with the director...keeps everything on the table and visible...email again after the meeting:helpful! thanks! great working with you guys! so much to learn! blah blah blah!!! and frankly it might be!!!!
keep your stick on the ice!!!!(hockey talk!!)
Mostly it sounds like noone is being clear with you....you should suggest staff meetings in general where everyone can make suggestions!
